Sometimes it is tempting to think that we should only focus on high-quality content and that the rest will take care of itself.
Well, that’s not true.
The design, look and feel of your blog plays a significant role in the way people interact with your content.
If your blog is ugly or outdated, you may notice that people don’t read what you’ve written, no matter how wonderful it is.

Why improve your blog’s design?
As mentioned above, the design of your blog is the mediator between the people and your content.
There might be a lot of design elements in your blog that causing people to bounce off from your blog before they even get a chance to read your content.
And that will be a huge shame.
What it means is that your blog design can affect your conversion rate.
Whether you are trying to get more sales, subscribers, or shares – it all depends on a combination of content strategy and design. And it does not always have to make considerable changes to achieve massive results.
Here in this blog post, I will be writing about five simple tips that can probably point you in the right direction.
#1. Keep it Simple
We all know many websites which are full of design elements that are moving at lightning speed, filled with ads, etc.
The overwhelming amount of content often means that as a visitor does not know what to click on or what to focus your attention on.
Unfortunately, this is usually reflected in the bounce rate, something you naturally do not like as an owner of the blog.
Simplicity in blogs and blog design is therefore essential, extremely important if you ask me, especially when you know that the average attention span of a visitor is only about eight seconds.
When designing or redesigning a blog, be smart to ask yourself whether you can put things in a simple way.
Several points to keep in mind:
- Don’t be afraid of a little whitespace (see tip 2)
- Ensure a logical grouping of information
- Create a clear hierarchy
Web design trends come and go, but a well-arranged, clear website will never go out of style.
So easy. That sometimes makes the visitors stay on the platform for too long, going through all the content.
#2. Add White Space
White space (or negative space) is essential in web design. In a nutshell, white space is the empty space around the content of a page.
You can think of the space between more significant parts of your page (such as between the navbar and the header), but also smaller components (such as the space between lines and paragraphs).
In addition to the fact that your website is a lot easier to scan and read, white space can also provide a modern, open, and fresh feeling.
You can also draw extra attention to your call-to-action by making smart use of whitespace, which can result in more clicks and conversions.
#3. Optimize the loading time of your website
The speed of your website is essential. After all, nobody likes waiting, especially on the internet.
And if we have to believe Econsultancy, around 40 percent of visitors will leave your website if it takes more than three seconds to load.
You can, therefore, state that slow loading time is disastrous for your website and conversion.
Luckily there are different tools nowadays to track the loading time of your website.
I personally always use Pingdom & Google’s PageSpeed Insights. With these two tools, you can quickly and easily test the loading time of your website, and identify possible causes of slow loading time.
You can check in the image above where I have done the speed test for my blog and it load under a second which is very good.
In general, you can do the following things to improve the speed of your blog:
- Compress all images before uploading them (for example with imagecompressor.com).
- Use a GZIP compression. In this way, the files sent from your server to the browser are compressed.
- Sometimes switching hosting providers can help significantly improve the speed of your website. (My Most Recommended Hosting is Bluehost)
- Reduce the number of redirects to your pages.

#4. Make your website responsive
Too often, I come across a website that is not optimized for mobile display. Zoom in and out endlessly; you probably know everything about it. Very annoying, don’t you think?
In 2019, as a company, self-employed person, blogger or you name it, you can’t do without a mobile-friendly website. Today, as everyone knows, life is dominated by the mobile phone.
To emphasize this even more: almost 40 percent of all Internet traffic comes from a mobile device and accounts for about half of all purchases made online.
The mobile revolution is still in full swing, and the end is not yet in sight.
To keep yourself and your visitors happy, it is a smart move to pay extra attention to the mobile display of your website. Because, if you want to participate with the big boys, this is a must!
#5. Make your email subscription more professional
If you ask someone to subscribe by email, you are asking them to trust you.
The level of trust is also communicated at a design level – if you have a vague-looking opt-in form, the chances are that they are not trustworthy.
The best choice is to have a professionally designed subscription form such as Chris Ducker on his homepage.
This creates a lot of confidence in my mind because it has its photo, its details and then a list of all the places where it was featured.
Not everyone can afford this, thus, and I wanted to keep this blog post about simple changes you can make.
So what can you do in your blog?
The best thing to do is to spend a little time making sure that your opt-in areas don’t look cheap.
That means we remove weird images and colors that don’t match the rest of your site. You also want to make sure that the font style and size are the same. Do not only use the standard style for subscription forms.
